The Process
Working with glass products is challenging because it reflects its surroundings. There’s one technique that works well with glass. Place the product in front of a diffused light and photograph it. Position white and/or black foamcore on either side of the product to shape the product and fill in the shadows.
Exploded view photography requires creativity to find solutions for problems. For instance, how to suspend all the parts in space. We used several sets of fishing line to create “bridges” where the pieces of the product rested. This was literally a balancing act. It was delicate and needed fine-tuning to find the right spacing between pieces.
To further push the boundaries of imagery, we wanted to capture active liquid filtering through the coffee brewing system. To achieve the dripping liquid, we set our camera to a high shutter to get the sharpest drops. This entire collection of photos came together in Photoshop but without clean raw photos, it’d be a more difficult project.
